Special Guests
Room 4-U Minutes for May 13, 2008
Kara R. called the meeting to order on May 13, 2008 at 6:40 PM and welcomed everyone.
Jacquelyn K. led the American pledge and Nicole W. led the 4-H pledge. There were approximately 100 Room 4-U 4-H Club members and guests present.
Mrs. Schaubert, Christine Schaubert, and Bethany Wesco led us in our Devotions through an amazing illustrated Scripture, Proverbs 31:10-31.
The Elkhart County 2007 Senior Fair Queen, Rachael Maurer, led us in prayer before our meal.
Our carry-in dinner buffet included many delicious foods such as hot dishes, salads, vegetables, magical punch, and dessert. Each table had its own pitcher of magical punch that looked like water, but it held quite a surprise for those who tried it. Thank you to everyone who brought such delicious food.
For our program, Mr. John Begly, of Illusions 2 Illustrate, performed a variety of spectacular illusions which demonstrated Biblical truths and the importance of building our lives upon things that have eternal value. Some illusions included an unexpected dove, an unexpected rabbit, and even an edible napkin!
Our special guests for the evening were the Elkhart County 2007 Senior Fair Queen, Rachael Maurer, and the Elkhart County 2007 Fair Queen, Mekayla Diehl. Rachael Maurer talked about her busy, fun-filled week at the fair and the many events in which she participated.
Using the name of our club she drew a parallel, explaining that God also has room for each one of us; that He cares for us and wants His very best for each one of us, just as our leaders do. She further illustrated this idea by reminding us that although our 4-H leaders guide and instruct us, they cannot do the work that our 4-H projects require. In the same way, as our parents, pastors, and Sunday School teachers seek to instruct us in how to honor and serve God, we must remember that it is still our responsibility to obey God's Word and follow His will for our own lives. No one else can do this for us.
In her final challenge, she admonished us to learn to look to God and lean on Him for help in every area of our lives, just as we have learned to depend on our 4-H leaders for support and encouragement with our projects. As Mrs. Maurer so eloquently stated in her parting words, “God is there to love, guide, support, and encourage you through His Word, and by using others who are a part of His family. He is available anytime. You just need to call on Him.”
Mekayla Diehl talked about the events involved in the Elkhart County pageant and the friendships she had made. She also talked about her experience down at the State Fair Queen pageant. She expressed her appreciation for our club leadership and the values our club has embraced. She shared with us that her greatest blessing during her reign as queen, was the opportunity she had to become friends with the Senior Queen, Mrs. Maurer. At which time, they gave each other a great big hug. It was plain to see that they had come to know and love each other dearly.
There were no nominations for 2008 Senior Fair Queen. So, Mrs. Schaubert encouraged everyone to go home and think about people who might enjoy being Room 4-U's Senior Fair Queen nominee; call them; ask them, and then let her know.
Finally, Mrs. Schaubert announced our highest seller awards for 4-H Geraniums: 1st place with a $25.00 prize went to Leah T., who sold a grand total of 299 geraniums! 2nd place with a $15.00 prize went to Jennifer and Jessica S., who sold 239 geraniums. Finally the 3rd place $10.00 prize went to Amy G., who sold 226 geraniums. Honorable mentions included: Ellen A., with 121 geraniums, Nicole W., with 142 geraniums, and Katherine C., with 200 geraniums. Mrs. Schaubert also announced that 29 club members sold a grand total of 2,325 geraniums which gave our club a profit of $581.25. This total, combined with two donations equaling $25.00, brought our club profit up to a grand total of $606.25, which was $6.25 more than we earned last year.
Mrs. Schaubert distributed 4-H manuals in the absence of Mrs. Wise.
Mother/Daughter Banquet committee members were: Bethany J., Committee Chair; Ellen and Katie A.; Katherine C.; Anna J.; Laura M., Kara R., Bethany R.; Mrs. Amy S.; Jennifer and Jessica S.; and Jill S..

Room 4-U Minutes for March 4, 2008
Kara R. called the meeting to order on March 4, 2008 at 7:05 PM.
Taya L. led the American pledge and Sarah S. led the 4-H pledge. There were forty-one Room 4-U 4-H members in attendance.
The Secretary's Report was given by Katherine C..
Bethany R. gave us our Treasurer's Report. She stated that we had $502.77 in checking and $97.35 in savings.
Songs included "Happy Birthday" to anyone with a March birthday and "Hokey Pokey" and were led by Carrie H., Julia T., and Leah T..
Elizabeth A. gave us our Health and Safety Report on dental care. She explained that we should brush our teeth at least 3 times a day and, if possible, use a fluoride rinse, to avoid plaque and tartar build-up, which leads to tooth decay and is hard to get rid of.
Brittany W. gave us our Community News Report. She mentioned several upcoming community and 4-H events that would be of interest, such as Project Changes for 2008, Share the Fun, and a Musical Recital for local nursing home residents.
For Devotions, Bethany J. read a poem she had written, entitled, "Upward Focus” to remind us to focus on God every day.
Old Business was conducted by Mrs. S.. She thanked the girls for their creativity and hard work in making the 73 valentines which were taken to Greencroft on Valentine's Day. She also shared how much the residents appreciated our kindness. Sign-up sheets for Demonstrations, Building Supervision, and Geranium Forms were also passed out. Appreciation was also expressed for a full refreshment sign-up sheet this year.
For New Business, Mrs. Wise passed out the manuals and Mrs. Schaubert requested that girls stay in the Fellowship Hall, gym, or coat area, before and after 4-H meetings. Along with the 4-H Herald update, she explained the importance of geranium sales for our club and defined how those who choose to give donations, in place of selling geraniums, may earn equal points.
Our program for the evening was, "Budget Busters", facilitated by Elkhart County 4-H Extension Educator, Laurie Sula. It was a fun, interactive game which helped teach us how to manage our money by setting aside certain amounts for certain things. First, we split up into five groups: "High School Drop-outs"; "High School Graduates"; "Two-Year College Degree"; "Bachelor of Science Degree"; and "Professionals."
Each group was handed several cards with options for “necessary items”, such as transportation, food, etc. After each group paid back the corresponding amount for their choices, each received some “circumstances”, such as, have a baby, break your legs, buy health care items, and so on. Each group had to pay the amount which corresponded to their choice or level of education.
Although the "High School Drop-outs" had the lowest salary to begin with, they had the most money at the end. Surprisingly, the "Professionals," who started out with the most money, ended up with the least money, demonstrating the whole point of "Budget Busters", that though you may have a lot of money to start with, it doesn’t really matter, unless you understand the importance of living within a carefully planned budget.
After "Budget Busters" ended, prizes were awarded for those who had the "Most Green"; the "Most 4-H Pins"; and or the "Most 4-H Clothing". The prize for the "Most Green" went to Elizabeth R.. The prize for the "Most 4-H Pins”, went to Kara R., who had 25 4-H pins, and the prize for the "Most 4-H Clothing", went to Julia T.. Each girl received a 4-H Clover Apron as their award and others who had come dressed for the competition, but did not receive the top prize, were given 4-H pencils.
Recreation for the evening was led by Ellen A.. The game was "Who Am I?" A piece of paper, on which a noun was written, was taped onto the back of each person who wanted to play. Girls asked each other questions about "who" they were. As soon as each individual was able to guess “who” they were, they could remove their paper.
Snacks were brought by Katie A., Faith M., Ellen A., and Brittany W.. Drinks were brought by Kara R. and Bethany M.. Our adult helper was Mrs. Anderson.
Taya L. led the American pledge and Sarah S. led the 4-H pledge. There were forty-one Room 4-U 4-H members in attendance.
